Along with the over 800 paintings and more than 1,000 drawings Vincent Van Gogh was also an avid writer. He wrote more than 800 letters, most to his brother Theo. These

letters give us a glimpse into the world of the artist and give some insight into his works.

The collections of Van Gogh letters reveal him to be thoughtful and sensitive, they do not reveal a madman as some might incorrectly assume. They provide a narrative of his life and explain many of his creative processes. The letters explain how having failed at ministry with the church he was overtaken with his artwork. They reveal his inspirations, his disappointments, and his constant poverty.

His letters not only give us glances into his world but they can be considered an art form of their own. Many of his letters are illustrated with sketches of works that he was in the process of creating or of works that he had just completed.
